DEFENDING CHAMPIONS FALL SHORT AS GERALDTON BOOK A PLACE IN THE BIG DANCE

Daniel Hobley

Perth

A solid performance on day four of the carnival has earnt the Geraldton Senior Cricket Association top spot on the Alcohol Think Again Country Week table, after a forty-seven run win over Upper Great Southern at Charles Veryard Reserve. Geraldton captain Clint Yeates loss the toss and was sent in to bat, with that call seeing his side cruise with his opening pair Nigel Routledge and Jacob Sumner putting on 83 runs for the first wicket.

Upper Great Southern Spearhead Kendal Ballard made the initial breakthrough after having Sumner caught for (48) whilst Brock Francis was outstanding with 5 wickets which included the dangerous scalp of Routledge (39) who was bowled. Geraldton finished their innings with a par total of 10/166 from 59.1 overs with Clint Yeates (21) and Cody Bone (16) the only other top order batsman who gave a yelp.

In reply Upper Great Southern got off to an indifferent start losing Perrin Quartermaine, Bevan George and Arron Quartermaine for nought to slump to 3-66, with Geraldton quicks Ryan Hosking and Shayne Bidwell doing the early damage.

A party of four wicket-takers combined to demolish the Upper Great Southern top order with the next seven batsmen falling for 53 runs. Kal Joyce (57no), Perrin Quartermaine (19), and Kendal Ballard (13) provided the only resistance. Shayne Bidwell led the Geraldton attack superbly with 5-24 from his 18 overs.

A disappointing Upper Great Southern out for 119 in 53.4 overs after being undone by a strategic and organised Geraldton outfit.
